Orthodontics
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of tooth and jaw irregularities. Problems such as crowded teeth, narrow jaws, open bite, or upper-lower jaw incompatibility can cause not only aesthetic concerns but also chewing dysfunction and temporomandibular joint problems. Orthodontic treatments are planned to correct these issues and help patients achieve a mouth structure that is healthy both functionally and aesthetically. Today, a wide range of treatments is available, from traditional braces to clear aligners.
Traditional Metal Braces
Metal braces are one of the most common and effective methods in orthodontic treatment. In this system, small metal brackets are bonded to the teeth, and force is applied through the metal wires between them to guide the teeth into the desired position. Thanks to its durable structure, it is highly effective in correcting complex orthodontic problems such as severe crowding and jaw irregularities. Often preferred among children and teenagers, this method is generally more affordable than other options. The elastic bands used during treatment come in different colors, which can make the process more enjoyable.
Clear Braces
This is a treatment option developed for patients with aesthetic concerns. Clear or tooth-colored ceramic brackets are bonded to the teeth and connected with metal wires. Thanks to their nearly invisible structure, patients feel more comfortable in daily life. Clear braces are as effective as traditional metal braces and are used to correct problems such as crowded teeth, open bite, and narrow jaws. However, because ceramic brackets are more delicate, they require more careful maintenance than metal braces.
Invisalign (Clear Aligners)
Invisalign is a modern treatment method that uses a series of custom-designed clear aligners to straighten teeth. These aligners are designed in 3D according to the structure of the teeth and are changed at specific intervals. Because they are removable, they provide great convenience while eating and cleaning the teeth. It is an ideal choice especially for adults and individuals who care about their appearance. Invisalign is effective in solving mild to moderate orthodontic problems and can deliver successful results in a short time when used correctly and regularly.
Lingual Orthodontics (Braces Placed Behind the Teeth)
Lingual orthodontics is a treatment method performed with brackets placed on the back surfaces of the teeth rather than the front. This makes the treatment completely invisible from the outside and offers an excellent solution for patients with aesthetic concerns. Although lingual brackets are effective for correcting tooth position, the treatment process can be somewhat more complex and costly. Also, because they are located behind the teeth, there may be an initial adjustment period for speech and tongue movements. However, the aesthetic advantages outweigh these minor disadvantages.
Jaw Correction Appliances
These appliances are used to correct jaw irregularities or support jaw development. They provide effective results especially in growing children when the lower or upper jaw needs to be moved forward or backward. Jaw correction appliances help resolve chewing and speech problems while also preventing future dental and jaw issues. Regular follow-up and patient compliance are very important during treatment, because consistent appliance use directly affects treatment success.
Rapid Palatal Expander
A rapid palatal expander is a treatment device used in patients with a narrow upper jaw. Narrowness of the upper jaw can cause crowded teeth and jaw incompatibilities. This device gradually expands the two bones in the palate, creating space for the teeth to align properly. Especially effective in growing children, this method can help solve the problem without the need for surgery later in life. The duration of appliance use varies according to the patient’s jaw structure and treatment plan.
