Periodontology
Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that examines the supporting tissues around the teeth and aims to protect their health. Gum diseases often begin with early signs that are difficult to notice and, if left untreated, can progress to tooth loss. Therefore, maintaining gum health is critically important for overall oral health.
Scaling and Root Planing (Subgingival Curettage)
This procedure begins with removing plaque and tartar accumulated on the tooth surfaces. Then, the tooth roots are smoothed with special instruments, allowing the gums to reattach firmly to the teeth. This method reduces gum inflammation and stops the progression of periodontitis. It is generally used as the first treatment option for early-stage gum disease.
Periodontal Surgery
In advanced gum disease, surgical procedures are performed to clean infected tissues, reshape the gums, or repair underlying bone damage. During surgery, the gum tissue is lifted and root surfaces and infected bone are cleaned. This helps the teeth rest on a stronger foundation and prevents tooth loss.
Gum Contouring (Gingivoplasty)
This procedure is performed to improve the aesthetic and functional appearance of the gums. Irregularities or excessive gum growth are corrected to create a more natural appearance. Gingivoplasty improves smile aesthetics and also helps teeth be cleaned more effectively.
Bone Graft Application
In areas where bone loss has occurred due to periodontitis, lost tissues are repaired using bone graft materials. This procedure encourages regeneration of the bone supporting the tooth and creates a solid foundation for advanced treatment options such as implants. Bone grafting is also important for preserving jaw structure and improving aesthetic appearance.
Gum Graft
When gums recede, a soft tissue graft is applied to protect the tooth roots and address aesthetic concerns. In this procedure, healthy tissue usually taken from inside the patient’s mouth is added to the recessed gum area. Gum grafting helps protect the teeth better and improves smile aesthetics.
